EMLA Plasters contain lidocaine and prilocaine to temporarily numb the skin before needle insertion, blood sampling, vaccination and minor skin procedures.

EMLA Plasters are medicated adhesive plasters containing the local anaesthetics lidocaine and prilocaine. They are used to temporarily numb the surface of the skin before certain medical procedures, helping to reduce pain and discomfort associated with needle insertion, blood sampling, intravenous cannulation, vaccination, and minor superficial skin procedures.

Each plaster contains EMLA cream under an occlusive dressing, allowing the active ingredients to penetrate the skin and produce local anaesthesia in the area where the plaster is applied.

How to use

EMLA Plasters are intended for external use on intact skin.

  1. Make sure the area of skin is clean and dry.
  2. Open the package and remove the protective liner from the plaster.
  3. Apply the plaster to the area where the procedure will be performed. Do not press directly on the centre of the plaster, as this may cause the EMLA cream to spread underneath the adhesive.
  4. Press firmly around the edges to ensure that the plaster is securely attached.
  5. Leave the plaster in place for the recommended application time. For procedures involving needles on intact skin, such as blood sampling or cannulation, it is typically applied approximately 1 hour before the procedure.
  6. Remove the plaster immediately before the procedure and wipe away any remaining cream.

The required application time and number of plasters may vary depending on the patient's age, the procedure being performed, and the area of skin being treated. Always follow the instructions in the package leaflet or the advice of a healthcare professional.

Contraindications and precautions

EMLA Plasters should not be used in patients who are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, other amide-type local anaesthetics, or any of the other ingredients of the product.

The plaster should generally not be applied to open wounds, damaged skin, or areas affected by certain skin conditions, unless specifically instructed by a healthcare professional. Contact with the eyes should be avoided, as EMLA may cause irritation and temporarily reduce protective eye reflexes.

Use in newborns, infants and children requires particular attention to the recommended dose, number of plasters and application time. EMLA should not be used in certain premature infants, and age-specific restrictions described in the official product information must be followed.

For external use only. Always read the package leaflet before use and follow the recommended application times and age-specific dosing instructions.
